The Way DAY 1 - Follow Me

DAY 1 - Follow Me
Luke 3:1-9

“Follow me.” When Jesus asks people for a commitment, he doesn’t start with a list of beliefs. He starts with an invitation: “follow me.” It’s an invitation to learn a way of life - his way. In fact, in the book of Acts we learn that the first Christians were simply called “people on the Way.” Following Jesus is an invitation to not just believe but embody His teachings, to walk in His way through the complexities of life. Being able to live the Way of Jesus was - and is - good news.

In the classic sci-fi book, The Left Hand of Darkness, one of Ursula K. Le Guine’s characters says, “It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.” It’s far too easy to become obsessed with heaven as the destination of the Christian life. But Jesus invites us on a lifelong journey. This journey extends into eternity in ways we can barely imagine. At the end of C.S. Lewis’ book, The Last Battle, characters are surprised to find heaven is really a neverending adventure with Aslan.

What a privilege to travel with Jesus! As we step into a new series and a new year, Jesus once again says to you, “Follow me.”

REFLECT:
When you think about being a Christian, do you focus more on the destination or the journey?

PRAY:
Lord, thank you for inviting me follow you. Teach me to walk your Way. Amen.
