I THIRST: THE ROCK OF SALVATION

March 22, 2026

The Israelites travel through the wilderness

Scripture: Exodus 17:1-7

This week's sermon deals with the Israelites traveling through the wilderness toward the promised land with Moses leading them. They find themselves in great need of water and begin grumbling about how good things were back in Egypt. They complained about their lack of water and provision and Moses' leadership.

How often, when we are struggling and feel like we are wandering in the wilderness, do we start complaining, grumbling and romanticizing the past. Moses goes directly to God with their complaints and God gives Moses instruction to take the staff used to strike the Nile to bring water from the rock which flows with abundance.

Today's scripture is just as relevant today when we look at situations with scarcity, after we have seen and experienced God's provision.

What will our response be?

Will we have faith?

Will we complain?

Will we trust?

Will we remember God's faithfulness?

Even when we are not faithful, God provides and is faithful. The symbolism of water coming from the Rock is significant as God provides the living water, His only begotten Son, Jesus who is the Rock of our salvation.

Life brings its challenges.

Where do we go?

Is the Lord among us or not?
