“Amazing Grace: and Laughter”
Scripture: Genesis 18:1-15;21:1-7
By now Abraham and Sarah have been on the journey for some time. Ever been on a trip and it seems like your never going to get here? When God told Abraham at 75 years old, to go, now we find Abraham at 100 years old, still no children.
Visitors appear by the oaks of Mamre and Abraham, recognizes the Lord. He runs to offer them food, drink and refreshment. Abraham tells Sarah to make bread and he has a calf butchered and prepared for his visitors. When they ask where Sarah is, they announce that Sarah will have a child in her old age. She hears from the entrance of her tent and laughs to herself. Yet, they know and question why she laughs. Sarah denies it in fear. What a journey of unexpected twists and turns.
Life is like that sometimes. Even in the midst of the journey, we may find ourselves chuckling with what transpires on the way. The promise of God, so long ago is coming to fruition. Imagine, she should not be capable of conceiving or having a child. With God nothing is impossible. When we have given up hope… God says, “I told you what I was going to do.”
Why are we so surprised? Isn’t it just like God to take us to the impossible, so you know the only way things could be unfolding is if God made it happen. The journey is important as well as the destination. We are living it right now. Will we enjoy the journey?
Laughter and levity are a great part of the journey, learning to laugh and celebrate God’s faithfulness and goodness to supply all our needs. What are we facing as a church, or in our personal journey, that we need to pause and realize God’s hand and holy humor, and promises will not be thwarted? Let us learn to laugh, notice the distractions and detours because it is all part of the journey of faith. Life is the journey and God has the direction, map, and destination which is sure and certain.
This week take the time to stop and smell the roses. Laugh at yourself and the moments making memories and holding them in our hearts to celebrate and behold God’s sovereign plan for our lives.
